R. Frank Saunders, Jr. History Lecture Series

lying-in-state-poster-12-1 Georgia Southern鈥檚 Department of History inaugurates the R. Frank Saunders, Jr. Lecture Series in December with a lecture titled, 鈥淟ying in State: The Diplomacy of Daniel Webster.鈥 The lecture will be given by professor of American studies at Winthrop University, Donald Rakestraw, Ph.D., on Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center Auditorium, Room 1915. Rakestraw served as professor of history for 25 years and director of American studies, beginning in 2006, at Georgia Southern before retiring and relocating to Winthrop in 2013. He has published dozens of scholarly works including a Choice Academic Book of the Year selection, Prologue to Manifest Destiny: Anglo-American Relations in the 1840s and 鈥淭he Diplomacy of the Civil War鈥 in American Foreign Relations: A Guide to the Literature since 1600. He is currently writing Defender of the Peace: the Diplomacy of Daniel Webster for Rowman & Littlefield. During this lecture, Rakestraw will offer a glimpse at Daniel Webster, the diplomatist, as he demonstrated a mastery of 鈥渓ying in state鈥 and left a legacy in foreign relations that rivals that of statesmen and lawyer. The lecture is free and open to the public, and proof of attendance will be provided.
