‘People…Purpose…Action — Growing ourselves to grow others!’

At Vlog, we grow ourselves to grow others. As we explore opportunities for development events, we want to ensure we are meeting the needs of the individuals who make the institution run and succeed everyday–YOU!

Staff Development Workshop Proposals

Are you interested in leading a staff development workshop?

The Staff Council Professional Development Committee invites all Georgia Southern staff and faculty to submit a workshop proposal for consideration. Proposals submitted for consideration should engage our Eagle Nation staff with the aim of growing ourselves to grow others. Workshops will be held via Zoom monthly on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. Additionally, the Staff Council Spring Staff Development Conference will be held on the Statesboro campus on Wednesday, March 19.

As our students facing crises continue to increase, practitioners should be equipped with the appropriate tools to navigate challenging student incidents. This session will be held as a combination of lecture, case studies and group discussion. The presenter will provide a few key techniques to de-escalate students in crisis situations to maintain a safe campus environment. The learning objectives for the session will be as follows:

  • Participants will examine strategies to ground and reorient oneself in a stressful situation
  • Participants will develop a personal safety strategy for themselves and others
  • Participants will discuss with others effective strategies to de-escalate crisis situations

The session will incorporate case studies with small group discussions followed by large-group debriefs. This format will allow for open discussion between facilitators and participants to discuss appropriate de-escalation techniques to ensure campus safety. Particularly, participants will be able to reflect on past experiences of how they handled previous crisis situations. Then, ideally participants can develop their own personal safety plan when faced in a crisis situation.

What if I told you that one word had the power to change your career, your year, or even your life? What is that one word, you may ask? The answer: it depends. You and only YOU know what that word is. Maybe it’s mastermind, giant, sunfleck, or no. Maybe it’s awe, electromagnetic, faith, or shift. Your word is one of the thousands of words that has the power to guide you, inspire you, align you, and remind you of who you are, how you want to feel, and what decisions you should (and shouldn’t) make about your year, your career, and your life. This session will start you on your journey of finding YOUR word of the year.

The world of work, especially in higher education, can be one of isolation and loneliness. As professionals, we are educated to be experts at our jobs/disciplines, and not so much to be experts (or even proficient) at collaborating with others. Yet the continually increasing complexity of our world requires that we work across silos if we are to be our most effective and productive.  In this workshop, we will dive into the siloed world of higher education, consider how our predisposition towards silos is hindering us from being our best, and discuss strategies and some practical applications that we can use to begin reaching across boundaries to foster collaboration.

Why is feedback important? In this session, we will learn why we should collect feedback, how to create and share a Google Form, and how to analyze the data in order to make improvements.
