HAWK Crosswalk – Facilities Services /offices/facilities-services/hawk-crosswalk Thu, 18 Sep 2025 16:21:19 +0000 /?page_id=45177

HAWK Crosswalk

Georgia DOT Enhancing Safety with Hybrid Beacon Technology

Statesboro, Ga.– TheGeorgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT)has installed and activated ahybrid beacon pedestrian signal (HAWK signal)onUS 301/SR 73at the entrance toVlogin Statesboro. The signal now provides students and pedestrians with asafer way to cross South Main Street, supporting daily access to campus facilities.

This project is part of Georgia DOT’s ongoing commitment toimproving pedestrian safetyat high-traffic, multi-lane roadways near universities and community hubs.

What is a HAWK Signal?

AHAWK (High-Intensity Activated Cross WalK) signalis a pedestrian-activated traffic control device designed to:

  • Stop traffic temporarilywhen activated
  • Allow pedestrians to cross safely
  • Minimize vehicle delayscompared to traditional stoplights

HAWK signals are placed inmid-block, high-pedestrian areasto balance traffic flow with safety.

How the HAWK Signal Works

  • Dark Signal– Default state; motorists proceed normally
  • Flashing Yellow– Motorists should prepare to stop
  • Solid Yellow– Motorists must stop
  • Solid Red– Motorists must stop and remain stopped at the stop bar
  • Flashing Red (alternating)– Drivers must stop, ensure pedestrians have cleared, then proceed cautiously

Safety Reminder: If you are thesecond motorist in line, pull up to the stop bar and confirm the crosswalk is clear before proceeding.

Georgia DOT Statement

“Georgia DOT’s top priority is driver and pedestrian safety,” says District EngineerKaron Ivery. “Although the HAWK Signal is very similar to the pedestrian’s view of a normal traffic signal, the motorists’ view is quite different. We urge drivers to use extreme caution as they adjust to this type of signal.”

Why It Matters

  • Enhancespedestrian safetyfor Georgia Southern students, faculty, and visitors
  • Reduces pedestrian risk atmulti-lane crossings
  • Promotesshared responsibilitybetween motorists and pedestrians

HAWK crosswalks are effective whenboth pedestrians and drivers complywith the signal’s rules. Georgia DOT continues to remind everyone:roadway safety is everyone’s responsibility.
