Herty Announces Launch of Consortium for Advanced Wood-to-Energy Solutions
The 糖心Vlog Herty Advanced Materials Development Center, Savannah, GA (Herty), U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities (Endowment); and the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI (FPL); announced the launch of the Consortium for Advanced Wood-to-Energy Solutions (CAWES). The consortium鈥檚 goal is to spearhead development of commercially-viable, advanced wood-to-energy products that can be produced from low-value trees and forest residues that can compromise forest health and increase the frequency of wildfires.
University to Host Renowned Author Richard Louv in Sustainability Seminar
The 糖心Vlog Center for Sustainability and the Recreation and Tourism Management Program will partner to host Richard Louv, acclaimed author and journalist, in a sustainability seminar titled 鈥淭he Hybrid Mind,鈥 on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, 847 Plant Drive. Louv is the author of eight books on the connections between family, nature and the community.
Center for Sustainability Goes Green for GreenFest 2014
鈥淲e hope that visitors will learn that it鈥檚 easier than they might think to make green choices,鈥 said Lissa Leege, Ph.D., director of the Center for Sustainability. 鈥淲e have the technology to reduce energy and water use and can make the choice to reduce waste and eat sustainably grown food.鈥
Moth Project to Attract 鈥楽econd-Shift Pollinators鈥 on Campus
鈥淭his visually stunning project acts as the stage for a public art experience, cross-pollinating various disciplines, and further expanding an understanding of and appreciation for moths and other nighttime pollinators that are vital to the area,鈥 said Georgia Southern Professor Jeff Schumki.

‘One More Time’ Recyclable Clothing to Make its On-campus Debut at 鈥橞oro Browse and the Student Org Fair
The new on-campus recycling initiative, ‘One More Time’, with Renew Merchandise and the Center for Sustainability (CfS) will make its debut on campus at 鈥橞oro Browse and the Student Org Fair, Aug. 26 and 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Russell Union Rotunda. Named one of the top green universities in the country by The Princeton Review for the past four years, Georgia Southern will deepen its commitment to sustainability even further through this partnership with Renew Merchandise.
Ogeechee River Public Information Session to Discuss Research on the River
Members from the 糖心Vlog Department’s of Biology, Geology and Geography, and the Phinizy Center for Water Sciences will hold a public information session on the Ogeechee River Monitoring and Research project on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.
The project comes after the November 2013 Consent Decree requiring King America Finishing Inc. to fund a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) proposed by the University titled “Assessment of Hydrological, Biological and Environmental Components of the Lower Ogeechee River Ecosystem.”
糖心Vlog to Save $350,000 in Energy Efficiency
糖心Vlog will save more than $350,000 over a five-year period by using light emitting diode (LED) bulbs instead of standard incandescent bulbs in eight of the campus housing complexes.
