About Group Therapy
Why Group Therapy? Get the perspectives and support of your peers in an interactive space! The small group setting of 6 – 8 members with a facilitator will helps you learn to develop more healthy and satisfying relationships while you discover that you are not alone and others also deal with similar concerns.
All group therapy services are completely free for Georgia Southern students. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group. If you are a current client of the Counseling Center and wish to join a therapy group, please contact your counselor and ask about a group screening appointment. The group screening appointment is a chance for you to meet the group facilitators and learn more about the group. If you are not a current client, please call the Counseling Center to set up the intake and screening process.

Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic, creative arts modality that utilizes narratives and the reading of specific texts to facilitate personal growth and deeper emotional processing in a guided discussion format. Through guided discussions and exploration of texts on Self-Compassion, students will explore how bibliotherapy can facilitate a deeper understanding of connection through shared experience while promoting self-efficacy, self-discovery, and reflective practice. This group will meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM at the Statesboro Counseling Center. The book will be provided with the expectation to read prior to each weekly discussion. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

This group is for students to learn and practice skills on how to cope with intense emotions, both in everyday life and in a crisis. We will work through several groups of skills fundamental to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): becoming non-judgmentally aware of our thoughts and emotions in the moment, learning how to change thoughts and feelings, and decrease distress and increase healthy coping skills. This will be a skills based group to practice both in group and outside of group meetings. This group will meet Thursdays from 3pm to 4:30pm at the Statesboro Counseling Center. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

This group is for students to learn how to identify and process emotions. Each week will be focused on a different emotion “umbrella” and students will get a chance to practice embodying the emotion as well as participating in experiential/processing activities best suited to that particular emotion umbrella. Students will also learn skills to reduce the intensity of their emotions and respond in more helpful ways. This is an open group that will meet Wednesdays from 3pm to 4:30pm at the Armstrong Counseling Center. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

Good Grief is a therapy group that offers a compassionate space to explore the many feelings and challenges that come with losing someone important. Participants can expect to connect with others who understand grief, learn healthy coping strategies, find ways to honor their loved one and rebuild after loss. This open group will meet in-person at the Armstrong Counseling Center on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:00pm. Group members must have experienced the death of a loved one. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

This process group aims to help students explore authenticity, vulnerability, and self-compassion. Through guided reflection and here-and-now interpersonal work, members examine patterns like perfectionism, comparison, and difficulty taking up space. The group creates a supportive environment to deepen self-understanding, practice showing up more fully, and build meaningful connection with others. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

Recovering Perfectionists is a therapy processing group for those who struggle with letting go of control or feel overwhelmed with impossibly high expectations. In this group, we hope to develop practices that challenge self-doubt and cultivate self-compassion. The goal is to embrace who you are and be your most authentic, flexible self. This group is in person on the Statesboro at the Counseling Center on Thursdays from 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

A therapeutic D&D group that uses fantasy adventures to help players understand emotions, challenge negative thoughts, and build confidence through cooperative play. Participants can expect a cooperative campaign that turns inner turmoil into monsters, mysteries, and quests, inviting the party to face these challenges head-on and discover resilience through adventure. No prior TTRPG experience is necessary, and dice and other materials will be provided.This group will meet on Fridays from 1:30-3:30PM in-person at the Armstrong Counseling Center. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.

This group offers students the opportunity to challenge social anxiety through the practice of Walk & Talk Therapy, an approach to therapy that blends gentle movement, mindful reflection, and open conversation in a supportive outdoor setting. Students will discover how being in nature can improve mood, reduce stress, and deepen self-awareness through mindfulness practices. All fitness levels are encouraged and welcomed. This group will meet on Fridays from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM at the Statesboro Counseling Center and walk the outdoor trail around the RAC. All students must complete the screening process before being considered for admission into a therapy group.
Spring 2026 Workshops
You do not need to be a current client of the Counseling Center in order to attend a workshop. All workshops are completely free and open to all students! Please check each workshop or group’s location and modality; some workshops are in-person on a particular campus, some are online, and others might have a hybrid option. You do not need to attend every week; these are designed so you can drop in any week that you are interested and available!
In order to be respectful of all who choose to attend, video and/or audio recording is not allowed under any circumstances (class assignments, news articles, etc.).

Beyond the Recovery is a therapeutic support group designed for Georgia Southern’s NCCA student athletes who are navigating or have navigated the challenges of a sports-related injury. Recovery extends far beyond the physical healing process. Injuries can impact confidence, identity, emotional wellbeing, and connection to one’s sport. In this group, student athletes will have a supportive space to share their experiences, give and receive encouragement, and explore the mental and emotional aspects of recovery. Together, we will process topics such as returning to play, rebuilding trust in the body, managing stress, redefining athletic identity, and maintaining overall mental wellness.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle to self-care is simply making the time to do it! Join us and drop in for a weekly scheduled time dedicated for intentional self-care practice. Each week we will practice a new self-care activity ranging from creative activities to mindful activities and everything in-between! This workshop is in person at the Henderson Library on Statesboro Campus on Tuesdays from 1:15 PM to 2:45 PM. This workshop is free and open to all Georgia Southern Students.
