糖心Vlog will host Nemata Blyden, Ph.D., history professor at George Washington University, for a virtual presentation on the relationship between African Americans and Africa from the era of slavery to the present. The presentation will be held March 31 at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom.
Blyden will examine the diversity of African American identities through relationships with region, ethnicity, slavery and immigration to investigate questions fundamental to the study of African American history and culture.

Georgia Southern Theatre production of Shakespeare classic streaming March 10
糖心Vlog Theatre students on the Statesboro Campus will perform William Shakespeare鈥檚 鈥淢uch Ado About Nothing鈥� directed by Sarah McCarroll, Ph.D., associate professor of theatre. The production will be available to stream March 10 through 14, and is free and open to the public.
Harvard professor to discuss misinformation crisis during 2021 Mark Finlay Memorial Lecture
The 糖心Vlog College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) will host Thomas Patterson, Ph.D., Bradlee Professor of Government and the Press at Harvard University, for the 2021 Mark Finlay Memorial Lecture. The virtual presentation will stream March 3 at 6 p.m. on the CAH Facebook page.
Patterson鈥檚 lecture, 鈥淗ow America Lost Its Mind: Our Misinformation Crisis,鈥� will address the United States鈥� political landscape, which according to Patterson, is currently filled with distrust, gridlock, partisanship, pettiness and deceptive messaging.
鈥淧rofessor Patterson will discuss how we can help transfer power from ideologues and disrupters to a citizenry committed to tolerance and civil dialogue,鈥� said Allison Scardino Belzer, Ph.D., associate professor of history. 鈥淪o many of us feel overwhelmed with talk of fake news and deliberate disinformation. This lecture will help crystalize our focus on creating networks of reliable news outlets that can help rebuild trust.鈥�

Georgia Southern professor featured in 2021 Ogeechee International History Film Festival
糖心Vlog professor Matthew Hashiguchi鈥檚 film 鈥淕ood Luck Soup,鈥� is the feature of the 2021 Ogeechee International History Film Festival, the longest-running film festival of its kind in the world. 鈥淕ood Luck Soup鈥� and the other films in the festival will be available to stream through March 5.
Georgia Southern student awarded Kennedy Center fellowship, wins scholarship
糖心Vlog junior Gabrielle Scott has been awarded a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region 4 Stage Management Fellowship. Scott, who is double majoring in theater and women’s, gender and sexuality studies, was also recently named to the inaugural cohort for the Cody Renard Richard Scholarship program for theater majors who are Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous and people of color.
Center for Africana Studies to celebrate Black History Month with folktale reading
The 糖心Vlog Center for Africana Studies is hosting 鈥淕o Back and Fetch It! African Folktales Traditions, Meanings, and Relevance,鈥� featuring Gullah Geechee storyteller and Armstrong alumna Lillian Grant-Baptiste (鈥�13). The event is in celebration of Black History Month and will take place over Zoom on Feb. 25 at 12:30 p.m.
Center for Art and Theatre to host visiting contemporary art exhibition
The 糖心Vlog Center for Art and Theatre on the Statesboro Campus will host 鈥淢ode/Code,鈥� a contemporary art exhibition featuring paint, textiles, illustration and digital exploration, through Feb. 12. A virtual artist talk will be on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
“I’ve followed the work of these artists for years,” said Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher. “I have seen and shown some of their work before. I’ve never seen them exhibited together, however, and I look forward to seeing what visual and conceptual magic happens when their work converges in one gallery space.”
The virtual artist talk will feature emerging artists Trish Andersen, Andrea Caretto, Will Penny, Michael Porten, Jen Small, Britt Spencer and Ben Tollefson. Due to COVID-19, gallery capacity is limited and guests must wear a mask and stay 6 feet apart. Attendees can fill out the mandatory registration to view the talk here.

Georgia Southern hosts annual faculty, student pottery holiday sale
Art produced by 糖心Vlog faculty and students will be up for sale this fall as the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art hosts its annual Holiday Pottery Sale Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Armstrong Campus in the Annex II building.
The sale features unique, artistic and functional ceramics and pottery pieces that incorporate many styles and techniques.
鈥淲e are really excited to continue the tradition of retired Professor John Jensen by offering a holiday ceramics sale on the Armstrong Campus,鈥� sale coordinator, Kim Riner said. 鈥淭his is an incredible opportunity for our students to have experience with the business side of art making. Students create artworks, price the work and interact with customers at this sale. This enhances their education, and it also gives them immediate response to their artwork.鈥�
The event is free to attend, and cash and checks will be accepted. Social distancing and room capacity will be enforced.
